Something like cancer is a big concept for 3 and 4 year olds to take onboard, yet Kelvin Grove Kindergarten children recently took action - raising money by holding their own mini Relay for Life. Keeping the message simple also allowed for families to pick up the conversation at home if the children had more questions.

Follett Street Kindergarten children were excited when their friend Otto brought in some honeycomb from his hives at home to show everyone. This led to a discussion about how bees collect nectar and turn it into honey. Otto’s mum Lucy offered to bring in a frame out of their hive, along with the equipment for collecting the honey so that the kindergarten children could learn more.

Awapuni School and Awapuni Kindergarten met during Term One to develop ideas for strengthening the school and kindergarten relationship. The kindergarten has taken eight of their oldest children over to the school, joining in the new entrant class’ literacy programme one-hour sessions. Recently they worked on their phonics and the letter h.

5+ A Day Wheel-A-Thon
5+ A Day Wheel-A-Thon - West End Kindergarten

West End Kindergarten families and friends had a fun time at their recent 5+ A Day ECE Challenge wheel-a-thon. The challenge is a nationally run campaign, encouraging young children to add an extra serving of fresh fruit and vegetables to their day. The two-hour wheel-a-thon saw a number of decorated bikes, trikes, scooters and karts zipping around Kartsport’s track in Longburn.

Some families and teachers from Manchester Kindergarten had an exciting morning recently when they were part of a large group who got together at Taimoana Park in Feilding for the Ōroua awa hui. The river hui was well attended by various members of the education community.

A regular visitor to Mill Street Kindergarten is Zappo the Magician. His popularity is evident in the open arms and welcoming smiles he received on his recent visit. This time his Magical Lifesaver Show focused on being safe around water and to be sun safe. His sense of humour and magical talents enthralled the children and adults alike.
